NY4: Aug 9-14 Blues Summit with Robben Ford

This seminar will expose students to the diverse world of blues guitar playing, providing students with everything they need to be great blues guitarists. Beginning with simple blues progressions, students will leave the class playing licks in the styles of greats like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Bonnie Raitt. Topics covered will include scales, chords, licks, and tunes in many different blues styles including funk-blues, jazz-blues, and modal blues.

Blues Summit
The Blues Summit is open to intermediate and advanced guitarists, bassists, and drummers. Students choose one class from those listed and attend this class each day. In addition, all Blues Summit students attend Faculty Master Classes and participate in Performance Class where students will work with a rhythm section on repertoire related to their chosen class. Students also attend a Master Workshop with a Guest Artist.

Learn the essentials of funk guitar through the music of James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, and P-Funk. Students will learn the essential elements of rhythm and lead funk guitar including the signature "single note" rhythm style. This course will also cover modern funk guitar styles of such artists as John Scofield and Trey Anastasio. This is a special opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich style of funk guitar.

Funk Summit
The NGW Funk Summit is designed for guitarists, bassists, and drummers to totally immerse themselves in an experience devoted to bringing out the funk. Students will receive a daily diet of instrumental instruction and ensemble coaching with the NGW Funk Summit Faculty. From the roots of Motown and Stax Records to the artists of today, the NGW Funk Summit is a one of a kind exploration into this genre.

NGW cordially invites all creative, open-minded, and genre busting musicians ON ANY INSTRUMENT to experience the first and only music workshop dedicated to the love and spirit of the Jam.

NGW has culled the Jam Summit faculty from some of the best in the business, picking instructors that combine solid classroom skills with serious chops and onstage experience. Jam Summit faculty have performed and recorded with Charlie Hunter, Derek Trucks, Bob Weir, Stanton Moore, String Cheese Incident, Warren Haynes, J.J. Cale, Eric Krasno, George Porter, Jr., Idris Muhammed, Big John Patton, Zigaboo Modeliste (The Meters), Karl Denson (Greyboy Allstars), Robert Walter, Taj Mahal, Galactic, Mofro, Tea Leaf Green, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, Chris Wood (Medeski, Martin, and Wood), Skeric, Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Jabo Starks, Jeff Watkins (James Brown), The Headhunters, Bobby Previte, Mike Dillon, and many, many more.

The Jam Summit will be a space where intermediate to advanced players, of all instruments and ages, will be guided and encouraged to unleash their potential as improvisers and spontaneous composers. Participants will explore the places where rock, folk, jazz, funk, latin, reggae, country, psychedelic, and free playing can meet, meld, and morph.

At least twice a day, you will play with your fellow Jammers under the guidance of a faculty mentor. Each student will also have a primary instructor that will work with them during the Music Intensives on instrumental techniques, repertoire, time, groove, music theory, and other concepts. All students will get a chance to spend quality time with each of the instructors, as well as witness great master classes during the Summit Community Gatherings, groove at the Faculty Super-Jam, and rock the student concert. This Summit will give you lots of new tools and ideas for expanding your musical horizons.
